List of Nationalised Banks in India ( Banks Under IBPS Exam)

.
Nationalised banks dominate the banking system in India. The history of nationalised banks in India dates back to mid-20th century, when Imperial Bank of India was nationalised (under the SBI Act of 1955) and re-christened as State Bank of India (SBI) in July 1955. Then on 19th July 1960, its seven subsidiaries were also nationalised with deposits over 200 crores. These subsidiaries of SBI were State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), State Bank of Indore (SBIR), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Patiala (SBP), State Bank of Saurashtra (SBS), and State Bank of Travancore (SBT).

However, the major nationalisation of banks happened in 1969 by the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The major objective behind nationalisation was to spread banking infrastructure in rural areas and make cheap finance available to Indian farmers. The nationalised 14 major commercial banks were Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Dena Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), Punjab and Sind Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB), Syndicate Bank, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India (UBI), and Vijaya Bank.

In the year 1980, the second phase of nationalisation of Indian banks took place, in which 7 more banks were nationalised with deposits over 200 crores. With this, the Government of India held a control over 91% of the banking industry in India. After the nationalisation of banks there was a huge jump in the deposits and advances with the banks. At present, the State Bank of India is the largest commercial bank of India and is ranked one of the top five banks worldwide. It serves 90 million customers through a network of 9,000 branches.

List of Public Sector Banks in India is as follows:

Numerical Ability Exam – Syllabus & Topics to Prepare

Be it school or college, mathematics & numbers have been the most feared subjects for many. The trend continues in bank exams too as many assume numerical ability to be tough. So, in continuation of our series about preparing for common written exam, we shall look at the syllabus for numerical ability this week.

maths numerical ability bank exam, prepare for numerical ability bank examNumerical ability is all about calculation of numbers.Unlike quantitative aptitude, this paper would require simple mind calculations only.Given the job profile of a bank employee, test of numerical ability mainly aims to find out how fast you arrive at the correct answer.

The clerk exam pattern depicts this section to have 50 questions each carrying 1 mark.(50 x 1 = 50 marks) & each wrong answer shall reduce 0.25 marks.

Topics to cover: Based on questions repeatedly asked in previous banking exams, we have provided a predictive list of important chapters for preparing.
  1. Numerical problems (missing no.,series completion etc)
  2. Percentages (like profit & loss %, marks,shares etc.,)
  3. Market price,Cash price & Expenditure problems.
  4. Time & Work, Speed & Distance problems
  5. Fraction, Ratios, Average & Volume
  6. Factoring (LCM, HCF..)
  7. Mensuration formulas (asking you to calculate length, breadth or height of square, rectangle cube etc)
  8. Simple interest & Compound interest (find missing variable or direct question)
Preparations:
  • Read & understand the question first before answering.
  • Know about BODMAS (Brackets, Order, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract) & workout problems implementing the rule.
  • Use common sense to solve questions that are real life oriented (like distance, age, time)
  • Calculators are not permitted inside the exam hall.Hence learn shortcut methods or formulas to solve a question quickly.
  • Time management is essential while attending mathematical problems. So tryout some mock tests with the same number of questions while preparing.
  • Practice as many model papers & previous year question papers with a clock - because time management is essential for mathematical problems.
Candidates who are weak in maths shall buy books like pratiyogita darpan, kiran publications or other workbooks/guides & practice min.5 yrs solved  question papers to memorize the concept.

Prepare notes: You may have a good GK book & newspapers but it wont be possible to read them again during the final preparatory stage. Here are some tips that would help you to plan.
  • Take notes while reading for the first time itself by writing hints & short sentences.
  • Make sure its understandable as you wouldn't want to see a note that is hard to recollect at the time of revision.
  • Glance through them everyday to avoid forgetting.
Start now: It can be very hard to memorize the dates, famous persons, abbreviations, definitions & numbers - all in one day.
  • Preparations must be an ongoing activity.Incase you have not begun, allot 1-2 hours daily from today to read the materials & transfer them onto your scribble book.

How to Minimize Mistakes in CWE PO and Clerk Exams of IBPS

Negative marks in common bank exam can create a sense of tension especially with new rules.Earlier, english test was deemed only for qualifying purposes but now it has become a scoring subject with every answer carrying  1 mark. What this means is - the marks of this section will also be added to the final score.

In one of the facebook page, ran a poll about negative marks. The results were
negative marks poll results
  • 65% of candidates chose to leave all unknown questions
  • 25% said they will decide after looking into the paper.
  • 5% wanted to run through all.
Leave & Lose: The 65% of those who intend not to touch the unknown question are the biggest losers here.By fixing your mind not to attend such questions, the chances of improving your score is very low. What should these people do?

Three strategies based on a person`s capability could be employed in a test which threatens with negative marks. They are:
  1. No risk
  2. High risk
  3. Calculative risk
Now, lets us see each of the approaches in detail

No risk: In this approach, you are not interested to take any risk in trying to answer the unknown questions. The fear of losing marks haunts you more.
  • Leaving 4-5 questions wont matter, but not attending 30-40 can hurt you.
  • Since you are not willing to take risks, you are losing an opportunity to increase the scores. So following this approach is not good.
High risk: This involves taking the risk by the throat. You are not bothered about the negative marks but rather look at the marks incase most of the guessed answers are correct. The probability of failure is high, as the success.
Incase there are 50 questions that you don't know but plan to guess all.
With all of them turning out to be wrong – you will lose 12 marks!
So, this strategy will also not work as choosing answers blindly just for the sake of attending all the questions will only reduce more marks.

Calculative risk: Most experts & coaching institutes recommend this method for competitive exams wherein you take some risk by guessing answers for few questions. For this, you must be sure of the choices made so far are correct. Only then it would be possible to calculate the amount of risk to take.

For example, lets say you are not confident enough to answer 50 questions.
As per the common clerk exam pattern, you will lose 50 marks of 250 which is definitely huge. The total would be 200 marks.
What if you try guessing the answer for atleast 40 questions.
If 20 are correct & rest are incorrect, you would gain 15 marks (20-5) which pushes your total score to 215 marks!
By calculating the risks involved, you have increased the score & this will surely help in ranking, considering the high number of candidates.

There are also certain things to be kept in mind,
  • Don't make random guesses. If you have some knowledge of that subject & can relate the question to the closest choice, then go ahead.
  • Do not waste time in thinking about the right answer.Do it or move on & return at last.Time allocation is more important
The main reason why we favor calculative risk is – although the negative mark is 0.25, you will be awarded 1 mark for correct choices.

So what is you approach? Share it as comments below,

# Never show hate about your previous company in resume like - ”Although i helped the company in fetching the project, the manager was partial with me in not rewarding me” .Such words, only creates bad impression about you.

# Trying to create sympathy mentioning family problems, personal economic issues, health problems can never fetch a job call.Incase you quit the previous job for health reasons, discuss it during the interview.

Finally, create a resume which gives a rough idea of your character and performance to the employer,be it for bank exams leading to bank jobs or for other jobs.

Common Interview Questions – How & What to Say

How to prepare for Interview ? Perhaps, this is a regular question asked by candidates selected in written tests conducted by banks & government organizations. Interview sessions are considered tough by many,as it involves speaking out. Here are some commonly asked questions in Interview & methods to answer them.

Question : Tell /Describe about yourself ( you will be asked this 90% )
Answer : Don't recite your resume.Tell about your education, experience, projects worked ,passion etc.,Make sure you complete this within 2-3mins.

Q: Why should we hire you into our organization
A : This would be perfect time to tell about your strengths, achievements & assets. Compare your profile with the job role & justify that you will be a best fit for the job. Answers like ‘This is a best company’ , I want a job in this field’ wont impress the interviewer.

Q : What are your strengths & weakness ?
A: Again this is also a commonly asked question to test how much you know of yourself.Make sure the Strengths you say have some relation to the job you applied.
I am very good in english’ can be said as ‘I have good communication skills’ .

Weakness - ‘I don't have any weakness’ means you are not ready to talk about it.Similarly don't say something like, ‘Im short tempered & get angry very soon’ – It gives an impression that you are not fit to work in group.Say something which does not affect the working & also describe about the steps taken to overcome that.

Probationary officer candidates may get offers from private banks too

Successful candidates in the first probationary officers' common written test (conducted in September) may have some good news coming their way.

They may be getting some more job opportunities – not only from the 19 nationalised banks for which the recruitment test was conducted – but also from a couple of private banks.

About 1.12 lakh candidates passed the probationary officers' common written test conducted in September (results just announced) for vacancies in 19 nationalised banks. At the moment, rough estimates indicate that there would be about 20,000 vacancies coming up in the next six months.

But as one successful candidate asked (no doubt reflecting the anxiety of thousands of others), “There are 20,000 job vacancies. And 1.12 lakh have qualified. What will happen to me? And the rest?”

Asked about these concerns, Mr M. Balachandran, Director, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), pointed out that the common written test was a qualifying exam. And in any competitive exam, there will be few jobs while there would be many applicants. But he did say that the 20,000 jobs number was a rough estimate and there could possibly be more opportunities – from outside the pool of 19 banks.

A couple of private banks have approached IBPS to see if they can also participate in the recruitment process, use these score cards and interview successful candidates (in the recent probationary officers' exam) for their vacancies.

Mr Balachandran said that there was ‘in principle' agreement among the various stakeholders to this suggestion. IBPS is working out a formula in consultation with the nationalised banks which will provide enhanced job opportunities for successful candidates, he said.

Role of Probationary Officers in Banks – Quick Guide

role of po in banks, probationary officer jobs,po bank jobs in indiaProbationary Officer is one of the post regularly advertised for bank recruitments, but many candidates do not know the work involved or the exact meaning of PO.One of our readers had asked a question regarding the role of probationary officer in banks.

Hence we felt it would be better to analyze the job profile in detail, enabling freshers to understand the position better before applying for upcoming bank exams. So, what are the functions of a Probationary Officer in bank ?

Probationary Officer is the first entry point for a job in bank, especially to fresh graduates & those without prior experience. The PO will report to their immediate senior officer, who will closely monitor & evaluate the performance of him/her for a certain period.

While on job, Probationary officers will have to take up assignments given by their managers.Along with training, they will also be deployed across various departments of the bank to gain exposure in operations & working of bank. So,in short, the PO must be willing to take up any work during the probation period in order to understand the process effectively & to scale greater heights and reach higher positions.

Probation period : Normally, the probation period for PO`s will be for 2 years. The probation period can also considered as the learning phase. Hence it is extremely important to be in good conduct, during probation.Banks have the right to terminate the employee during the probation,if he/she does not fit the position.

Salary: The payscale for probationary officers ranges between Rs.10,000 - 18,240. Depending on the post & grade after successful completion of probation, the pay scale may increase. An increase in salary for bank employees has been approved recently

Test of Computer Knowledge – Topics & Model Questions

computer awareness exams, computer bank exam Most candidates feel questions asked in computer section are easy & answerable. This may be to the regular usage of computers for our daily activities. But what to expect in test of computers? Here is a guide about the

question pattern that can be expected in IBPS common written exam.

Paper Pattern in IBPS CWE PO/ Clerk

learning for exam, ibps 2011 clerk exam pattern, common clerk exam pattern The preparations for common clerk exam to be held in the month of November would be underway.A lot have been discussed here about the IBPS selection process, eligibility etc.,Now moving on, we have decided to explain in detail the question paper pattern.

The written exam is scheduled to take place on November 27, 2011 & similar to the PO test, it might be conducted in 3 sessions to accommodate the large number of applicants (estimated to be approx. 50 lakhs)

Pattern breakup: Structure of the question paper is given below;ibps clerk exam pattern

Here is a quick look at some of the important titbits,
  • Duration: 150 minutes
  • Total questions: 250
  • Total marks: 250
Planning for the test in advance like time required for each question & section is necessary because of the equal weightage in objective test.
  • As there is no descriptive test, your objective test marks will only be considered in calculating the cut-off score.
  • Each question carries 1 mark & for every wrong answer – 0.25 will be reduced as negative mark
  • The minimum educational qualification for clerks is 10th/ SSLC, hence the questions could be answerable but twisted.
  • Referring school text books to understand the basic concepts shall be useful in solving problems related to mathematics.
Comparison: The Clerk & PO common exam pattern may look same but has two main differences,
Clerks have Numerical ability while Probationary officer CWE had Quantitative aptitude
Numerical ability mostly contains questions involving LCM, HCF, percentage, compound interest, averages, ratio, profit/ loss, choosing the best alternative etc.,To know the formulas, concepts & applying them in mind using short methods is important to complete this paper within the stipulated time.
The maximum marks for english section is 50 while it was 25 in PO
There is nothing new to add in preparing for english language paper as it attempts to measure the english skills of a candidate with questions about the language.Usage of grammar (includes fill in the blanks, choose the best answer) & comprehension type of questions will occupy a major part.

See our detailed post on preparing for each paper – Reasoning, Numerical ability, English, General awareness & Computers. Here, you can also find the important topics to read.
